Help!!!

Tomorrow I have to face my biggest fear of nursing school: needles.

Ok, laugh if you want, but I'm totally terrified of needles. And we have to both give them to and get them from other students!!

We had to watch videos on how to give shots this morning, and I couldn't watch.

My stomach is already in knots over it.

You'll do fine.

It's one of those things you 'just gotta do.' And when you have to do something, God helps you. :)

Anyhow, if the nurses I know are any indication, pretty soon you'll start looking at people's veins and going "ohhhhh that's a juicy one!!!" in the middle of otherwise normal conversation. And then you'll wonder why your friends start wearing long sleeves all the time.... ;)

Note: the following is a real account...

My first semester of nursing school, we encountered a day just like you will have tomarrow...giving the first shot. I wasn't nervous at all. Some of my fellow classmates, however, were not quite as calm as I.

The first student who ever gave me a shot was so nervous that she was shaking uncontrollably. She could barely hold the needle in her hand. And the first words out of her mouth to me were, "I'm so nervous...I have no idea what I'm doing." (Note...NEVER say this to your patients in real life! :)

When she stored up enough courage, she finally darted the needle into my arm. However, once she got the needle in my arm she was shaking so bad she couldn't push the plunger. So there I was with a needle in my arm and my fellow classmate's hand clinging to the other end and shaking violently. She never did settle down enough to push the plunger and the professor made her pull the needle back out. It may sound bad, but seriously...no harm done. It didn't hurt even with the needle wiggling around in my arm. I got no bruise, no soreness, no anything...and though my classmate had to repeat the skill test, she can now give shots with confidence.

I'm not telling this story to scare you. I'm merely trying to illustrate that a lot of people are nervous at first, but they make it through. Nursing school isn't meant to be easy...(if it were, anyone could be a nurse). It takes a special person to be a nurse (someone who is not just smart, but kind as well), and I know you're going to do just fine.

Trust in God and He will take care of you...

See you on the floor someday!

Anonymous 2: I just read your comment out loud to my clinical group. We haven't started yet, but we got a good laugh out of it.
